Day Trip to Prairie du Chien
Date: May 2, 2019
Time: 6:30 AM - 7:45 PM
Event Description
Join University of Wisconsin-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County Instructor Lisa Thomas on an exciting Day Trip to Prairie du Chien! We will begin our day at the Villa Louis restored to its 1890s British Arts and Crafts splendor. The home features original family furnishings and has a beautiful setting along the Mississippi River. Then we make our way to the Casino Queen for a buffet lunch, followed by the Fort Crawford Museum. The fort stood guard over Prairie du Chien from 1816 until 1856 and the museum features the history of the fort, the city, and the many lives that crossed here. Enjoy a behind the scenes look as we join the militia of 1814.
Next, we make a stop at Valley Fish and Cheese, a 4th generation commercial fishing family store. The store features fresh, smoked, and pickled fish as well as rare finds like buffalo, turtle, and alligator. Our last stop will be to the Effigy Mounds National Monument, with over 200 American Indian mounds. There will be a moderate amount of walking, but you may take a break when needed. The mounds and the views are worth the effort!
