Event Description
Silver Star by Jeanette Walls tells the story of "Bean", twelve, and Liz, fifteen, abandoned by their mother. They run away from home rather than be placed in foster care. The girls seek out a reclusive uncle, whom they have never met, living in Byler, Virginia. After making the trip cross country, the two are reluctantly accepted there, and begin to adjust, living in a house haunted by the ghosts of their family's past. When the girls try to make extra money by taking on part time jobs with local mill foreman, Jerry Maddox, their lives take an unexpected and dangerous turn.
